England

The origins of modern football can be found in the codification of the rules of the game in England in 1863. The English football league operates on a pyramid system, with more than 140 individual leagues and nearly four times as many divisions across England and Wales. The top tier is the prestigious Premier League, which features some of the biggest names in European football, such as Manchester United, Manchester City, Chelsea, Arsenal and Liverpool. The second-top tier is the Championship, and sides relegated to this division receive ‘parachute payments’ to help fund their wage bills while they attempt to mount another challenge for promotion.
